Soldier of fortune game download for pc
Although for the most part the levels are linear and keep you on a straight path to the finish, you will find a slew of neat and creative twists in every level. Whether it be riding atop a speeding train, infilitrating a high-tech Japanese corporation, or trudging through a frozen Russian base in Siberia, you feel like you're in a real-world location. And graphically, these locales couldn't be much better. The environments are a bit square and the textures aren't up to Quake III quality, but everything is well detailed and, as I've mentioned before, the character skins are to die for.
One of the things that impressed me most about SoF and that's a tall order since I have a long list of things I like about this game was the game's stability and the fact that it looked good on almost every video card combination I tried it on. Of course, no shooter review is complete without a look at the arsenal, so how does SoF stack up against the competition?
Well, it has its highs and lows. While there are a few futuristic weapons in the game like the Microwave Pulse gun and the heavy-hitting slug thrower, the core of the game revolves around good-ol' bullet lobbers. You have your small and large caliber pistols, your trusty shotgun, your sub-machine gun both a suppressed and non-suppressed version , your sniper rifle, and your extremely versatile heavy machine gun Of this list, the shotgun and heavy machine were my favorite.
The shotgun tears people apart at close range, and the heavy machine gun can do the same thing from a distance, plus it spits out phosphorous grenades which can cause some nasty burns. Some parts of SoF encourage you to creep through a bit more stealthily than most other shooters, but I found the best way to go through SoF was with gun a-blazin'.
There's a noise meter which is similar to the one in Thief. If you make too much noise, more enemies will come after you. However, I found this just encouragement to make more noise with my heavy machine gun and it didn't slow me down much or make me worry about making too much of a hullabaloo. In addition to the weapon loadout, there are numerous power-ups scattered around each level.
In keeping check with the realistic feel of the game, you won't find any speed enhancements or quad damage boosts. The power-ups in SoF are limited to grenades, C4, armor, flash paks, and the familiar health pack okay, so bundles of health aren't so realistic They are basically just a way for you to live longer as an unarmored John Mullins is a bloody John Mullins, or gives you a means to gib your opponents easier with a well-placed explosive charge.
The sound in SoF is simply amazing, and the designers did a great job of utilizing positional sound in the game to give you cues as to where your foes may be hiding. However, nonviolence is a possibility, if the player is a good shot it is possible to shoot an enemy's weapon out of their hand, causing them to cower on the floor to surrender.
The game also came with password-protected options to disable all gore and there is even a version of the game with the extreme violence permanently locked-out, titled Soldier of Fortune: Tactical Low-Violence Version.
Raven Software acquired a license from the mercenary magazine Soldier of Fortune to produce a video game based on the publication. This introduced the ability to dismember enemies in combat, adding to the realism of the game. The game was originally supposed to be much more realistic, featuring mostly real weapons, and the players taking damage would impede their movement and dexterity, depending on where and how many times they were hit.
In prior to the Kosovo War the game was also supposed to be partially based in Bosnia instead of Kosovo. Soldier of Fortune was praised as being a solid and entertaining shooter, with one of the game's greatest praises being its graphic depiction of gore and violence, which both proponents and detractors consider to be more realistic than most first-person shooter games.
Critical reaction was positive, with the GameRankings averaged rating of However, the Dreamcast version's reception was less enthusiastic, with the In , after receiving a complaint from a member of the public about the explicit content of the game, the British Columbia Film Classification Office investigated and decided the violence, gore and acts of torture were not suitable for persons under 18 years of age.
In a controversial decision, the game was labeled an 'adult motion picture' and was rated as a pornographic film. Soldier of Fortune is regarded by many as a classic of the first-person shooter genre. Soldier of Fortune was released on CD. One of the things that made Rainbow Six such a huge success was the planning and personnel choices that had to be made in order for the mission to be a success.
In SOF there is absolutely none of that. I found the most challenging part of SOF was figuring out the tunnels and mazes in the different levels in the game. One thing that the game designers failed at was the storyline, it just never seemed to reach out and grab me. Oh well, maybe the game designers can talk to the fine folks that released Max Payne or Operation Flashpoint. No matter how you like to play online, SOF has a game mode for you. Whether it is death match, capture the flag or control and conquer, there is something for everyone.
Playing online is a snap because SOF now uses Gamespy which makes connecting and playing with friends quick and painless.
Oh, boy!!!! Now I get to do the graphics section of the review. First off, I really have to ask the folks over at Raven Software what exactly they were thinking when they decided to have graphics in the game be so disgustingly gory? These include sub-machine guns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, projectile explosives, weapon attachments and cutting-edge tactical weapons.
Soldier of Fortune: Payback features the most common online multiplayer modes including Deathmatch.
